GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — A Friday night football game between Stratford High School and Summerville High School ended abruptly when fans were asked to evacuate the stadium due to reports of a potential threat. The game, held at Stratford High's football field in Goose Creek, was halted at halftime with Summerville leading 28-14.
Preston Giet, Director of Security for Dorchester District 2 (DD2) and a State Constable, provided insights into the incident. "Just after halftime, there was a rush of individuals both running toward and away from a disturbance behind the home stands. The initial report indicated an individual with a firearm threatening others, who then fled the scene," Giet explained. In response to the situation, attendees were evacuated as a precaution.
Katie Tanner, a spokesperson for Berkeley County School District, confirmed that the evacuation stemmed from reports of shots fired. Goose Creek Police also received a 911 call claiming multiple shots had been fired. However, after an initial investigation, police found no evidence to substantiate the claim. "No witnesses saw or heard shots, and no injuries were reported," Tanner said. Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe later confirmed that no shots were fired at Stratford High School.
Giet, along with other school officials, decided to evacuate the Summerville players and cheerleaders from the area for their safety. "This is the extent of the information available as of 10:55 pm," Giet added.
The game marked the first of the 2024 football season for both teams. Despite the abrupt end, no injuries were reported, and the situation remains under investigation by local law enforcement. Further details are expected to be released by Goose Creek Police as they become available.
