SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – The Summerville Police Department will be stepping up patrols and implementing DUI checkpoints this Saturday as part of a nationwide effort to improve road safety.
In collaboration with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the department is participating in the “Saturation Saturday” initiative, which aims to crack down on reckless and intoxicated driving. The operation will see an increased police presence, including extra patrols and targeted checkpoints.
The checkpoints will be active from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, and will be located on North Maple Street and Stallsville Loop.
The Summerville Police Department is committed to ensuring that everyone gets home safely and reducing the number of accidents and fatalities caused by impaired driving.
"Although it's illegal to drive under the influence, a staggering 13,524 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes in 2022, equating to one death every 39 minutes," the department stated.
Residents are strongly encouraged to make safe choices and consider alternatives to driving under the influence, such as calling a friend, using a taxi, or ordering a ride-share service.
