Mount Pleasant, S.C. - The Mount Pleasant Town Council in South Carolina is considering an extension of its ban on constructing new condo and apartment buildings for at least another year.
The initial moratorium on building new apartments was introduced in 2017, in response to the rapid growth of the town, which caused concerns about the ability of the infrastructure to keep pace. The council has extended the ban every two years for the past six years, but this time, the extension could be for only one additional year.
Councilman John Iacofano explained that the moratorium has a specific purpose and would end once the zoning and infrastructure catch up. Once the ban is lifted, the number of new apartments constructed will still be limited by the town's permit allocation system.
The ordinance will have its final reading on March 14.
