CHARLESTON, S.C. — State Representative Wendell Gilliard, along with various community leaders, is organizing a rally to support Vice President Kamala Harris in her upcoming presidential campaign.
The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, at the ILA Hall on Morrison Drive in Charleston. The rally will feature speeches from Democratic Representative Tiffany Spann-Wilder, political commentator Bakari Sellers, and Hollywood Mayor Chardale Murray. The event is being sponsored by the Women of International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422, former Senate candidate Kim Greene, and Rep. Gilliard.
According to the organizers, the rally is intended not only to show support for Harris but also to energize local Democrats. The flyer for the event emphasizes the urgency of the situation: "To prevent a Trump presidency, we have to roll up our sleeves and get to work."
Harris emerged as the leading Democratic candidate after President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid and endorsed her on July 21. If Harris secures the Democratic nomination and wins the general election, she would make history as the first female president, as well as the first person of Black and South Asian descent to hold the office.
President Biden has praised Harris, calling her selection as his running mate “the best decision I’ve made.”
With Charleston County flipping blue in the past couple election cycles, voter turnout at the top of the ticket will be key to down ballot races.
