The Town of Summerville has recently identified unauthorized access to its computer systems, potentially resulting in the theft of sensitive data. Upon discovery, an immediate investigation was launched with the assistance of the South Carolina Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity (SC CIC) Task Force.
This task force, led by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and including SLED Computer Crimes, the FBI, and the South Carolina National Guard, is working in conjunction with the town’s IT staff and Berkeley County IT to determine the extent of the data breach and to bolster cybersecurity measures.
Summerville officials are dedicated to safeguarding personal information and are continuously improving security protocols to counter emerging threats. They have assured the community that updates will be provided as the investigation proceeds and security enhancements are implemented.
Public safety services from the Summerville Police Department (SPD) and Summerville Fire Rescue (SFR) remain unaffected by the cyberattack. However, there may be delays in providing copies of some information. In case of emergencies, residents are advised to call 911.
