SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – Town officials in Summerville have confirmed that the municipality was targeted by a ransomware cyberattack.
According to a social media update from local leaders, the town's "vigilant monitoring systems" detected the attack early, allowing them to contain it promptly and limit the extent of the damage.
There is currently no indication that any sensitive data or documents were compromised during this incident.
Christopher Makowski, the Town of Summerville’s Public Information Officer, reported that the attack began Thursday morning when the Summerville Police Department noticed issues with their administrative systems. The IT department was alerted about 30 minutes later.
Makowski stated that the attack extended into Friday morning before being identified and managed.
“We concentrated on understanding the situation and took immediate actions to mitigate any potential damage. Cyberattacks can be complex and challenging to address,” Makowski noted.
The town is collaborating with state and federal cybersecurity teams to thoroughly investigate the incident and conduct a comprehensive forensic review of their systems.
Details about the attackers and the specifics of the breach are still unknown and will be disclosed once the investigation concludes.
“There are still many unknowns,” Makowski said. “As the investigation progresses, we will have more information about the source and details of the attack.”
While the town has established protocols for handling cyberattacks, specific details are not disclosed due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
“We want to reassure residents that all municipal services, including police, fire, and public works, are fully operational and continue to provide necessary services. We are committed to keeping the community informed and will share updates as they become available. Ensuring the safety and trust of our residents is our highest priority,” the Town stated.
Residents can find updates on the investigation and further developments through the town’s social media channels and website.
