Summerville Police Increase DUI Checkpoints for July 4th Safety

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – To ensure safer celebrations, the Summerville Police Department (SPD) will enhance patrols and set up DUI checkpoints on July 4th and 5th.

The checkpoints will operate between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on both days at several key locations: North Maple Street, Nexton Parkway, Brighton Park Blvd, Sigma Drive, West Richardson Avenue, West Boundary Street, and South Main Street.

The SPD's primary objective is to keep reckless and intoxicated drivers off the roads, ensuring everyone's safe return home.

Despite laws against drunk driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in 2022, one person was killed every 39 minutes in a drunk driving crash, totaling 13,524 fatalities from alcohol-impaired driving incidents. Even minimal alcohol consumption can impair driving ability, according to the SPD.

The SPD encourages using alternatives to drinking and driving, such as calling a friend or family member, hiring a taxi, or using a rideshare service via smartphone.
